Midwest Railroading in the 1980s
The eighties were a time of unparalleled innovation. Everything from locomotives to freight cars and railroad operations saw drastic improvements during this decade. The use of computers eliminated many jobs, and streamlined many operational and dispatching centers, and allowed rival railroads to cooperate and expedite shipments, creating a much more friendly relationship with valuable customers. The eighties also left us on the verge of the mega-merger era that saw the creation of four super railroads.
