Conrail

What to do with a failing infrastructure and several bankrupt railroads? The federal government stepped in and on April 1, 1976 created the Consolidated Rail Corporation or Conrail for short. Born from the ashes of Penn Central, Erie Lackawanna, and several other roads, Conrail became the major player in the Northeast. Hauling everything imagineable, Conrail became known for its fast intermodal “TV” trains. Conrail continued as a viable railroad until being divided up between CSX and Norfolk Southern in 1999.
